Student Projects

This is an update to advise of fully funded student projects & placements that we have coming up over the next few months.  If you are interested in any of these please email Jackie ASAP as they are extremely popular and can sometimes be oversubscribed.

School of Design & Informatics & Ethical Hacking. Runs: Mid September – End of April ‘25
Looking for employers to participate in a professional project module aimed at 3rd year under graduates. The project will run from midSeptember to end of April over two terms. Term 1 is where the student scopes the project, creates a proposal as to how the project will be managed. Term 2 is the delivery of the proposal. Project areas would cover a wide range, including ethical hacking/cybersecurity/ forensics/ gamification / sensor/ network systems / web apps/ tools etc.

School of Computing. Runs: September – March ‘25
An opportunity for a two teams of Computing Science, Electronic and Software engineering students to deliver on your project. The project must embody a software ‘product’ of some kind, such as a bespoke web application, mobile app, software library, plugin for an existing framework or similar. Projects must demonstrate a genuine requirement for the customer and not be a ‘toy’ exercises that the customer doesn’t actually need or already has a solution for.

School of Mechanical Engineering. Runs: September – April ‘25
Heriot Watt University are looking to work on company-led engineering design projects that can provide their engineering students with relevant work experience as part of their degree studies to improve their experience and chance of employment upon graduation.

School of Computing, Engineering and Technology. Runs: October – December ‘24
Looking to work with industry partners facing a challenge that a technology solution could solve. A small team of students will work on your idea over a few weeks and present the final idea. You will work closely with the students to ensure that your idea is scoped out for further implementation. There may be several groups working on the challenge you propose, and some of these projects will be selected for further development.

School of Design, Manufacturing & Engineering. Runs: October – May ‘25
Looking to work with industry partners facing a challenge that a technology solution could solve. A small team of students will work on your idea over a few weeks and present the final idea. You will work closely with the students to ensure that your idea is scoped out for further implementation. There may be several groups working on the challenge you propose, and some of these projects will be selected for further development.

Funding

– £7.5k Standard Innovation Voucher

These vouchers are to encourage new first-time collaboration between SMEs and a Scottish University or College. There are two types of Standard Innovation Vouchers:

  • Product/Process/Service Innovation Voucher
  • Workforce Innovation Voucher
– £7.5k Student Placement Innovation Voucher

These are an opportunity to build on existing relationships between SMEs and a Scottish University or College to continue the development of a Standard Innovation Voucher award.

Depending on the nature of your proposed project we can also look at funding external to Interface such as SMART grants, Innovate UK etc.

Social Innovation Challenge

Are you a social entrepreneur looking for an opportunity to make a significant impact?

The Firstport Social Innovation Challenge will fund and support an innovator who is eager to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time. This year, the focus is on finding solutions to the deep-rooted inequalities driving negative health and wellbeing outcomes. The most impactful social enterprise solution will receive £50,000 and tailored support.

Scottish Government unveils £885,000 fund to foster young entrepreneurs with grants up to £250,000

The Entrepreneurial Education Pathways Fund has been established to ‘engage young people in entrepreneurship’. This initiative, launched by the Scottish Government, aims to “inspire the next generation of business owners” and targets under-18s. Applications are open until September 9.

Workplace Transformation Support | Scottish Enterprise (scottish-enterprise.com)

Scottish Enterprise has introduced the Workplace Transformation Support programme, offering grants between £15,000 and £100,000 for companies planning to take investment in the next two years. The initiative aims to help businesses “develop leaders, improve processes, and enhance digital systems, ultimately boosting productivity and creating higher-value jobs in Scotland”.

Scottish Edge Funding

Scottish EDGE is Scotland’s biggest business funding competition, offering grants and loans from £10,000 to £100,000 to help grow your startup, social enterprise or charity.
