Discover the latest opportunities for businesses and third sector organisations to work with students.

Students can undertake projects or placements with host organisations to help explore new ideas or solve challenges they lack the resource or knowledge to undertake in-house. There are a variety of opportunities available which may be linked to the student’s degree programme or draw on more generic skills. Projects should be appropriate to the skill level of the student and never business critical. Please note some projects require no or minimal financial commitment, while some do. Sport Placements

Runs January – April 25′ (30 hours placements). Closing date: 30th November. Financial Commitment: None .

Sport students can offer a range of skills and knowledge exchange in the following areas:

30 hour placements over 10 weeks  – normally for three hours a week, but it can be arranged flexibly depending on agreement between placement providers and students

Environmental Management Placements

Runs May to July 25′. Closing date: 30th March 25′. Financial Commitment: None.

MSc Environmental Management is recognised as internationally leading in training environmental managers for careers in the public and private sector. The students have a wide range of skills, including in-depth and structured literature reviews (with access to scientific literature and library services), statistical analysis in the R language, spatial mapping and GIS, policy analysis, stakeholder interviews and online surveys and writing reports

Examples of previous projects

  • managing marine plastics in the North Sea
  • delivering a decision support tool to take into account the many pressures on marine protected areas and the implications of climate change on management
  • a socioeconomic impact assessment of renewable energy projects.
  • Using GIS to prioritise peatland habitats for restoration

Applied Health Science Placements

Runs: May-August 25′. Closing Date: 31st January. Financial Commitment: None.

This work-based placement elective offers a professional placement with a civic, government, industrial, public, research or voluntary health and/or development sector organisation. Students will undertake a ten-week placement with a host organisation 

The aims of the courses areto:   

  • Enhancestudent experience 
  • Provide students with an authentic learningopportunity 
  • Enhance studentemployability 
  • Enable students toacquire professional knowledge and understanding of the daily work, strategic priorities, objectives, and functions of a civic, government, industrial, public, research or voluntary health and/or development sector organisation 
  • Facilitate studentapplication ofacademic skills in a work environment 
  • Provide students with opportunities to strategicallydevelop a range of transferable skills, as well asourGraduate Attributes

Social & Political Science Students

Runs: May- July 25′. Closing Date: 31st October. Financial Commitment: Optional but not mandatory.

Social & Political MSc students are looking for research projects. These placements are usually on a full time basis over 8-10 weeks during May and July. This placement can be in person, hybrid or remote depending on the needs of the organisation.

Human Resource Management Placements

Runs: October – July. Closing Date: 30th November. Financial Commitment: None.

These masters students are looking for a research/project based placement to evaluate the practical application of their wide range of HRM theory such as 

  • Recruitment and selection 
  • Employee relations

Placements should be a minimum of 80 Hours and can be carried out between October and July. 

Project Examples: 

  • Motivation in the Workplace: The impact of leadership styles at Company X 
  • The impact of Corporate Social Responsibility on Employee Engagement 
  • A critical evaluation of the impact that the new HR service delivery model has on manager’s attitudes and perceptions of their role 
  • An investigation into the feasibility of implementing a flexible benefits package: a case analysis.

Global Hospitality Management Placements

Runs: January – May 25′. Closing Date: 6th December. Financial Commitment: None.

2nd Year postgraduate students are looking for 15 week placements in the hospitality industry. The course covers:

Business School Placements

Runs: January – July 25′. Closing Date: 6th December. Financial Commitment: Paid placements are encouraged but not required.

3rd Year undergraduate students from business, marketing, digital media, hospitality, festival and events, tourism and financial services degree programmes are looking for 6 month placements starting between January & March 2025.  

These students can devote time to a project, bring new ideas to your organisation and are an effective recruitment solution to your business. Placement duration must be 25 hours a week for 20-24 weeks.

Product and Graphic Design Placements

Runs: January – May 25′. Closing Date: 30th October. Financial Commitment: None.

3rd Year Undergraduate Product or Graphic design students are looking for placements. These cover topics such as:

Computing Placements

Runs: 1 year from September or January. Financial Commitment: Paid placements at least National Minimum Wage.

3rd Year Computing students covering a diverse range of degree courses in areas such as:

These placements must be full time, a minimum of 48 weeks, can be remote, hybrid or site based and paid at least National Minimum Wage to meet module requirements.

Film Placements

Runs: March – April 25′. Closing Date: 31st January. Financial Commitment: None.

This 40 hour placement is for 3rd year BA Hons Film Students, these can be a volunteering/Charity brief or take place in a production company. The students have access to fully equipped, specialist film facilities including high-end digital cinema cameras, professional film lighting, Avid Media Composer edit suites, Pro Tools, a professional dubbing theatre and a grading suite.

Photography Placements

3rd Year BA Hons Photography students looking for 120 hour placements starting in January. This placement can include facilitating learning about photography with schools or community groups, creating a body of work for a business or charity, or working with an organisation like a gallery or museum on their collections.

4th year Law students seeking placement opportunities, this is a 10 week unpaid placement with the student working 1 full day per week. The placement is to provide the student with real life work experience and would consider work including:

Food Science Placements

Undergraduate Food Science students are looking for 12 weeks placements (full time) beginning in January. Students are studying consumer science, nutrition and

  • The techniques and skills needed to develop new food products.

International Sport Management placements

Placement projects will necessarily vary with the needs and resources of the host organisation. Ideal projects are fixed-term, closed-ended projects with clear deliverable related to the area of sports management, such as:

Arts & Humanities placements

2nd year Undergraduate students can work on projects linked to skills developed through subjects including:

Skills include – research and analytical skills, creative writing, digital marketing and video contents

Examples of previous projects:

-History and Heritage students assisted the volunteers on this project to research and develop material relating to the history of the House and its previous owners. This will be used in preparation of materials to support and promote visitor tours of the property.

-History and Politics students have researched and prepared Policy documents to assist the awareness raising of heart disease in Scotland.

-Politics students work in local MP/MSP constituency offices assisting with local constituency initiatives and campaigns.

-Modern Language students assisted in the preparation and delivery of language classes to a wide range of attendees of the School.

-a small team of students from English Studies, History, Heritage and Politics and Film and Media disciplines researched and develop visual and social media resources and materials to assist with the promotion of products to both the UK and the rest of the world markets.

-Film and Media students worked within the CMR department to create film footage and promotional materials for use in the university recruitment campaigns.

Law Placements

Third and fourth-year undergraduate Law students (LLB and BA Law) looking to gain front-line experience within a busy law practice or law-related organisation, enabling them to put their studies into practice and pick up valuable insights into the working world.

Examples of previous projects

  • shadowing and gaining an understanding the workings of the Legal Analyst/Legal Tech team and undertaking of a research project set by Ashurst Advance.
  • opportunity to gain practical experience of legal work across all divisions of the business.
  • opportunity to apply in practice the academic knowledge and theory learned in an in-house legal team.
  • assisting with research project examining existing material relating to BAME inclusion in the Scottish and UK Legal professions.
