24 October 2019 to 25 October 2019

Edinburgh & Lothians

Venue: Business School, The University of Edinburgh, 29 Buccleuch Place, Edinburgh

Time: 10:00 to 16:00

From product development to career opportunities, this event will explore the multitude of ways public open data can help to transform our lives.

A new and creative approach will introduce a game-like element, making for a fun, collaborative and engaging learning experience.

You’ll be able to improve your data literacy and discover the potential uses of open data for research, organisational and societal change, start-up ideas and product development.

We will focus on extracting value from data relating to a number of social and economic themes, which may include:

  • Food and water security
  • Inequality and poverty
  • Security, safety, and wellbeing
  • Government accountability
  • Climate emergency
  • Education and opportunity

This event has been co-designed by the Information Services Division of NHS Scotland and Wallscope, supported by the University of Edinburgh Business School and the Scottish Government. It builds on previous workshops exploring the uses and benefits of open data in a range of scenarios.

The Scottish Government made a Programme for Government commitment in 2018/19 on opening up Scotland’s public sector data. This has been reflected in the Scotland's Open Government Action Plan 2018-2020, published earlier this year, which states “We will make more of our rich data public sector data open for social and economic good, and to help people understand how our country is changing.” Their involvement in this event enables us to explore innovative uses of this data across a range of themes.

Our data mixer aims to:

  • Explain data-related terms to a mixed audience
  • Use collaboration and teamwork to explore a wide range of ideas that can help people make a difference to their lives
  • Build a greater understanding of the potential impact of public open data through the practical application of new skills and knowledge
  • Facilitate networking and discussion and build new connections

On each day a range of industry experts and academics will be available to assist with group discussions.

At the end of the event, teams will have a chance to make a short presentation based on what they have learned.

Each team will be asked to describe their ideas about how data could be better used to address the challenges within the topics provided.

Who should attend?

Anyone who has a practical interest in the effective use of data across government and commercial organisations. This might include interested students, citizens, policy-makers or analysts.

No previous experience is necessary as the learning will be tailored to accommodate mixed levels of skills and experience.
