On Thursday 20th November 2014, the very best of Scottish Innovation will once again be celebrated as the Interface Excellence Awards return for the third year.

Showcasing collaborations between businesses and Scottish academia, the Excellence Awards will highlight the economic, social and innovative impacts arising from projects facilitated by Interface or have been awarded Innovation Voucher funding.

Entries are being sought for the Interface Innovation of the Year Award, Interface Sustained Partnership Award, and Interface Outstanding Contribution to Knowledge Exchange Award.  And this year we are introducing a fourth awards category – Multi-Party Collaboration Award.

  1. Interface Innovation of the Year – entries to this category should detail an innovative product, process or service that has been developed over the past three years; and demonstrate how support from the academic partner was fundamental to success.

Businesses that have been supported through the Interface brokerage service or via the Scottish Funding Council Innovation Voucher programme are eligible to apply.

  1. Interface Sustained Partnership – open to collaborations that have demonstrated long term partnering and benefits to both the business and the academic teams.  Applications should demonstrate how the partnership has developed from an initial project to a series of mutually beneficial activities.

Businesses that have been supported through the Interface brokerage service or via the Scottish Funding Council Innovation Voucher programme are eligible to apply.

  1. Interface Outstanding Contribution to Knowledge Exchange – this recognises an individual from academia, a business or business support agency who has played a pivotal role in the promotion of knowledge exchange within Scotland.
  1. Interface Multi-Party Collaboration Award – this new category has been introduced to celebrate larger scale collaborations across industry sectors, and the impact they can have on the Scottish economy. Applications are welcome from projects, groups and consortia involving three or more parties from Scottish academia and businesses that have been supported through the Interface food and drink, Interface brokerage service or via the Scottish Funding Council Innovation Voucher programme.

Previous winners of the Excellence awards include Grangemouth-based Advanced Microwave Technologies who used microwave technology to extend the shelf life of food and drink – while ensuring the products retained their natural colour, flavour and micronutrients; Macphie of Glenbervie, who, over a period of two years, engaged in 12 collaborative research projects with Scottish universities; and East Kilbride’s PAWSitively Natural, a producer of all natural, baked dog biscuits – who after success in the Excellence Awards has seen sales increase to a point that the company has had to expand into a specialist industrial unit.

The importance of academic collaborations to the Scottish economy cannot be underestimated.  Since 2005, partnerships facilitated by Interface have contributed more than £17m boost to Scotland’s GVA each year, and that figure is set to increase to £80m by 2018.

Dr Siobhán Jordan, Director at Interface commented:

“Not only do these collaborative partnerships help create and safeguard jobs and develop export opportunities they also enhance Scotland’s reputation as the benchmark for knowledge exchange.

“Scotland’s academic and research institutions are among the best in the world and, when matched with businesses, the impact these partnerships have on our reputation and prosperity is substantial. These awards celebrate knowledge exchange in Scotland, and we’re confident that the entries received this year will be of the highest calibre.”
