Shining a light on innovation

Interface is delighted to have played a role in fostering the partnership that brought a new installation to this year’s Enchanted Forest, the annual award-winning sound and light spectacular, currently taking place at Faskally Wood, Pitlochry, Highland Perthshire.
Nexus forms the heart of this year’s magical world and sets the tone for the entire show, which is themed, Luminara. The creation of Daniel Sutherland, Associate Dean of Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, the installation is a floating network of illuminated fibres and orbs suspended 10m high in the trees. Combining cutting-edge design with immersive 360° audio to create a gravity-defying spectacle that draws visitors directly into the show’s story, visitors are invited to enter the network and look up through a pulsing structure of light and sound.
Daniel explained: “The brief for the Enchanted Forest 2025 was a real inspiration – an invitation to present the connection of technology and nature within a networked and super-connected visual language. From early concept sketching to 3D modelling and on-site testing via Augmented Reality models, I wanted the installation to express this ‘connection’ as a living network of light and sound. Working alongside the exceptional teams at the Enchanted Forest and WaveMakers Live, who can turn any idea into an inspired lighting reality, was an absolute privilege. Their professionalism and creativity made this project possible. It has been a dream design brief to be involved in, and watching thousands of people wander through the glowing forest of installations when I visited was a real honour.”
Lorna Watson, Innovation Engagement Lead at Interface, supported the collaboration by bringing together the academic with The Enchanted Forest Community Trust, which stages the event, together with the event’s creative partners, Wavemakers Live.
She explained: “The Enchanted Forest initially approached Interface with a challenge to engage universities in developing lighting displays for Luminara, a spectacular immersive art experience. I facilitated discussions with several institutions, and as a result, Nexus is now one of the standout displays at the 2025 event. Our involvement has opened the door to many more collaborative projects with students and academics, bringing lasting benefits to this breathtaking spectacle of light and sound.”
Nela Popovic, CEO of The Enchanted Forest Community Trust, said: “Each year, The Enchanted Forest strives to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation, blending art, light, and sound into something truly transformative. Working with Interface and Daniel Sutherland on Nexus has been a wonderful example of how collaboration between academia and the arts can create magic that inspires our visitors and enriches our creative landscape. Luminara is all about connection, between people, technology and nature, ideas and light, and Nexus captures that spirit perfectly.”
The Enchanted Forest runs until 2nd November. Luminara invites audiences to step into its ethereal world where nature and technology intertwine. Through impressive larger-than-life installations, immersive soundscapes and storytelling, visitors follow the journey of a fading ‘Living Network’ and play their part in rekindling its light.
