University of St Andrews

10th October 2022

Founded in the 15th century, St Andrews is Scotland’s first university and the third oldest in the English speaking world. It is one of the top rated universities in Europe for research, teaching quality and student satisfaction and is consistently ranked among the UK’s top five in leading independent league tables produced by The Sunday Times and The Times, The Guardian and The Complete University Guide. Areas of expertise include optoelectronics and photonics, chemistry, materials science, infectious diseases, environmental biology and psychology.

The Knowledge Transfer Centre (KTC) was established in 2008 to support the world class research conducted at the University and to lead to commercial innovation, success and impact benefiting inventors, the University, business and society.

The KTC connects business and industry to relevant and valuable skills, knowledge and expertise within the university. The KTC team can facilitate and nurture productive and successful collaborations and relationships with university staff and students. The KTC also helps business and industry to identify and access the specific areas of research and the facilities required to match their particular interests and challenges.

The University of St Andrews KTC has a successful record of securing funding for KE/KT activities and projects, commercialising and licensing of the University IP and founding spin out companies from our technologies.

Dr Alan Miller’s Open Virtual World group have worked with Scottish SMEs, charities and community groups across Scotland. Computer scientists specialising in the novel application of cutting-edge virtual reality technology, the group provide solutions and products that have a uniquely long term approach. Content management systems and application frameworks give the client more control; they can update exhibitions themselves and troubleshoot any issues not solved by turning it off and on! The group draw on expertise across the university including from the departments of Earth & Environmental Studies, History and Classics. They enjoy learning from their clients and developing their approach in collaboration with them.

This video features heritage reconstructions around St Andrews and one of their exhibitions at Timespan Museum.
